Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif expressed strong disapproval of India’s decision not to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi and called for India to be banned from ICC events.

Rashid Latif Calls for India’s Suspension Over Asia Cup Trophy Snub

Latif argued that such defiance would normally result in swift disciplinary action in other sports, but he doubts the ICC will act against India due to its significant influence within the board.

While individual awards like Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament were presented, the Indian team deliberately avoided publicly acknowledging the ACC chairman.

“The Indian cricket team is a strong candidate for suspension from @ICC after refusing to collect the #AsiaCup2025 trophy and awards from the ACC Chairman. In any other sport, this would have been a straightforward case. But with Indians holding key ICC positions—Chairman, CEO, CFO, Commercial chief, and head of Events and Communications—a suspension seems unlikely. An ugly day for cricket as India once again breached the spirit and essence of the gentleman’s game, in broad daylight,” Rashid wrote on Facebook.

BCCI Secretary’s Statement

Meanwhile, the BCCI announced it plans to file a formal complaint against ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi at the upcoming ICC Conference. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that Naqvi failed to hand over the trophy to other delegates and took it with him.

Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav also commented on the incident:

“This is something I have never seen in all my years of playing and following cricket. A champion team was denied a trophy, and it was a hard-earned one. It wasn’t easy. We played two strong games back-to-back. I felt we truly deserved it. I don’t want to say much more,” Suryakumar told reporters.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Comments

Although the Indian team was willing to accept the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board Vice Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, Naqvi reportedly refused the request. As the ceremony was delayed, Naqvi was seen walking away with the trophy while the Indian players waited on the field. India, however, held their own celebration with a fake trophy, which many saw as a pointed response to the ACC chairman’s actions.
