The iconic Wankhede Stadium was established in 1971 by S.K. Wankhede. It rose from disputes over the Brabourne Stadium to become Mumbai’s premier cricket venue, opening just in time for the 1975 Test against the West Indies. The stadium gained international acclaim after hosting the finals of the 2011 World Cup, following which it was renovated to increase capacity from 33,000 to 45,000. Floodlights were installed in 1996 and later upgraded with LED systems ahead of the 2023 World Cup to enhance lighting during night games.
The stadium has multiple stands named after local heroes like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Sunil Gavaskar, showcasing its rich cricketing legacy.. The stadium is situated near Marine Drive in the Churchgate neighbourhood. Several old cricket clubs are near the stadium, including Hindu Gymkhana, Parsi Gymkhana, and Cricket Club of India.
The pitch has a red soil base with a grass overlay, offering a livelier surface and balanced gameplay. Early swing bowling with the new ball benefits from the coastal breeze, and the surface soon settles, making spinners lethal, especially in Test cricket as the day progresses. In limited-overs matches, the shorter boundaries and lightning-fast outfield make it a batsman's delight.
